This award celebrates books that support oral language development and recognises titles that appeal to children, encourage interaction and assist speech pathologists and parents in communication and literacy development.

Julianne Negri

Julianne Negri's debut children’s novel, The Secret Library of Hummingbird House, was published by Affirm Press in 2020. Before publication, Julianne was the recipient of several awards, such as the Australian Society of Authors Emerging Writer’s Mentorship Award, the Sisters in Crime Scarlet Stiletto Short Story Award and the Southern Cross Short Story Award. Julianne has years of experience working in children and youth programming for libraries, and has been variously a musician, eco-crafter, film maker and television host. She has five children and lives and works on Wurundjeri land.

Evie Barrow

Evie Barrow is a character-driven artist and illustrator specialising in picture books. She lives and works on Woi Wurrung Country in Naarm/Melbourne. In 2019, Evie's debut picture book Horatio Squeak, written by Karen Foxlee, was published by Walker Books. Since then, she has illustrated an additional eleven in collaboration with Hardie Grant, Scribble, Affirm Press, and New Frontier. Evie's works has garnered numerous prestigious awards, the most recent of which was the CBCA 2023 Notable Picture Book of the Year Award for Polly’s Grand Party Plan, written by Jane Godwin.
